PISA TOURS

An ancient and historical city, one of the old four Maritime Republics, Pisa was in the past a powerful trade centre and a melting pot for different cultures, and nowadays it is an important cultural centre with one of the oldest Italian universities and two prestigious institutions such as the Scuola Normale Superiore and the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna. Moreover Pisa is at the forefront of medicine and tecnology. It is famous all over the world for its Leaning Tower and the other magnificient monuments of the Miracle Square, but it boasts one of the most remarkable and little known city centres. Splendid palaces, museums, theatres, and the marveillous rivebanks, the "Lungarni", which have been celebrated by poets both Italian and foreigners, that lived or stopped in Pisa in the course of the centuries. To stroll around the city centre of Pisa is like walking through the pages of the history of this city, but also of Tuscany and Italy as well.

PISA TOUR 1: CATHEDRAL SQUARE (= THE MIRACLE SQUARE)

Duration:  1 -3 hours (depending on your needs and on the number of monuments you want to visit also inside)

Guided tour of the famous Cathedral Square of Pisa focussing on the four main buildings: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Leaning Tower and the Monumental Cemetery.                                                                       

PISA TOUR 2: CATHEDRAL SQUARE (= MIRACLE SQUARE) + PIAZZA DEI CAVALIERI

Duration: 1h30- 3 hours (depending on your needs and on the number of monuments you want to visit also inside)

Guided tour of the famous Cathedral Square of Pisa focussing on the four main buildings: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Leaning Tower and the Monumental Cemetery. Then we proceed towards Piazza dei Cavalieri (=the Square of the Knights of St. Stephen),  where the  famous and prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore is (ranked among the best universities in the world and the place where some Nobel prize winners studied). On the same square there is the "Torre della Fame", a tower where the Count Ugolino Della Gherardesca, mentioned also in Dante's "Inferno", was imprisoned and condamned to starve.

PISA TOUR 3: CATHEDRAL SQUARE (= MIRACLE SQUARE)+ PIAZZA DEI CAVALIERI+  OLD CITY CENTRE ARRIVING AS FAR AS PIAZZA GARIBALDI.

Duration: 2-3 hours (depending on your needs and on the number of monuments you want to visit also inside)

From here we continue across the old city centre to see the oldest seat of the University of Pisa, various examples of medieval towerhouses, the fruit and vegetable market, the shopping steet as far as we reach Piazza Garibaldi, to catch a glimpse of the riverbanks, the "Lungarni", and the main bridge "Ponte di Mezzo".

PISA TOUR 4: THE RIVERBANKS OF PISA ("THE LUNGARNI") ON FOOT/ BY BIKE/ BY BOAT*/BY TROLLEY TRAIN*

Duration: variable, depending if on foot or other means of transport. 

Guided tour that focusses on the palaces, churches and museums situated along the riverbanks of Pisa and the curiostities, anecdotes related to their story.

It is possible to include a visit to the permanent collection of Palazzo Blu  (=Blue Palace Museum),  where you can get an idea how the interiour of a typical Pisan noble residence l'interno looked like by admiring the pieces of furniture and decorations inside the building (entrance fee).

*Boats and trolley trains are available only for groups. With individuas or families we can either walk or use an electric cart vehicle.

PISA TOUR 5: VISIT TO ONE ORE MORE MUSEUMS ALONG THE RIVERBANKS 

Duration: it depends on the museum or museums chosen.

Visit to National Museum of San Matteo (Museo Nazionale di San Matteo), or Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale), Blue Palace (Palazzo Blu- permanent collection)

This option can be combined also with one of the above mentioned itineraries or it can complete the visit of Pisa in case of a full day guided tour.

PISA TOUR 6: TOUR OF MEZZOGIORNO (THE SOUTHERN PART OF PISA CITY CENTRE)

Duration: 2-3 hours.

Guided tour to discover the garden Giardino Scotto and the ruins of the Fortezza Nuova (=New Fortress), the Church of St. Martin, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Piazza Chiara Gambacorti, Palazzo Gambacorti (the cityhall), Corso Italia (shopping street), Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, Mural by Keith Haring, Domus Mazziniana.

PISA TOUR 7: TOUR OF THE MEDIEVAL WALLS (opening depending on weather conditions) 

Duration: about 2 hours. Guided tour strolling on the medieval city walls of Pisa, recently restored, to discover the city from a different point of view!

For big groups we recommend the use of radio headsets to ease the communication between the guide and the participants on the narrow space available on the walls.
